THE Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) has been chosen by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) to lead tomorrow’s annual May Day Parade (MAY 2) which celebrates solidarity among trade union members.
The parade, which will is expected to attract several thousand trade unionists, supporters and well wishers, will start at Writers Square and continue through Belfast city centre from 11.30am.
Tomorrow’s event is central to several weeks of trade union and cultural activities demonstrating support of organised labour under the auspices of the ICTU.
Speaking ahead of the colourful carnival style parade, Gerry Murphy, INTO’s Northern Secretary, said: “The May Day Parade is an annual event which joins trade unions together to celebrate the work being carried out.
“This year’s has been an extremely significant year for the Trade Union movement as a whole but particularly for us here at INTO. INTO has been in the vanguard of opposition to austerity and it is in the education sector that the cuts are already having a real impact.
“This parade, and the events surrounding it, continues to highlight the strength of the trade union movement, it demonstrates a continued united front and shows that we are ready for the campaigns ahead.”
Mr Murphy said tomorrow’s parade is carried out in an upbeat carnival style fashion and is a celebration of collaboration which he says will bring about real change which will benefit lives.
