Markethill High School students achieve best GCSE results in the school’s history

By Eleanor McGillie

Markethill High School pupils are celebrating as today’s results show they have achieved the best GCSE grades in the history of the school.

The school, which first opened in 1959, has played a vital role in the growth of the town and has always had a reputation for students delivering high grades.

But this year, as the school announces a record enrolment of 500, the students are celebrating a record pass rate for the number of pupils achieving five or more A*-C grades including English and Maths.

Not only that, but the school is also recording its highest ever pass rate for GCSE English Language, with 77 per cent of pupils achieving an A*-C grade. Also, 73 per cent of the 99 pupils in Year 12 achieved an A*-C pass grade in Maths. Altogether, over 80 per cent of pupils achieved five or more GCSE passes at grades A*- C.

Nine pupils achieved seven or more A/A* grades in all their subjects.

James Maxwell, principal of the school said: “Today’s results consolidate Markethill High School’s position as a leading non-selective Controlled school in Northern Ireland.

“The record pass rate for the number of pupils achieving five or more A*-C grades, including English and Maths, is testament not only to the high quality of teaching across all 27 GCSE subjects offered at this school, but also to the commitment and drive of pupils.

“The results are a clear vindication of this school’s unrelenting priority on the development of pupils’ literacy and numeracy skills.”
