AmberGreen urges home owners to switch to solar to build sustainable communities

By Eleanor McGillie

HOME-owners across Northern Ireland are facing the stark reality that our heavy reliance on imported energy is something which needs to change if we are to provide a sustainable future for ourselves and our children.

Robert McNeill, sales director of AmberGreen Solar, one of region’s leading energy developers, said more and more people are realising that cold winters, like the one we have just experienced, will become more commonplace in the future, and, with this, come the ever increasing energy bills.

Mr McNeill, who has been working with AmberGreen since 2011, said the company is taking more and more enquiries from homeowners who are simply fed up having to pay massive bills.

Around 98 per cent of energy for heating in Northern Ireland is currently being imported while electricity generation still relies heavily on imported fossil fuels.

Mr McNeill said: “We are all waking up to the fact that we need to invest in our futures – not just in terms of financial savings and return on investment but also to ensure we make a contribution to creating an environmentally sustainable place to live for our children and our grandchildren.

“Reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels can reduce Northern Ireland’s exposure to volatile energy markets. If you consider solar, once the cost of equipment has been recovered, the running costs will be minimal which will in turn lead to low energy prices which creates more certainty than market based supplies.

“Our energy policy is very much driven by Europe, and, in order to meet energy targets, we have to change the way we generate electricity.

“We firmly believe that Northern Ireland, not only needs, but is able to move to much higher levels of renewable electricity production. We will be doing everything in our power to ensure Northern Ireland will achieve its target of 40 per cent of its electricity consumption from renewable sources by 2020. As a region of homeowners this target is achievable.”

Amber Green Solar, a subsidiary company of Amber Green Energy, which has bases in Armagh and Belfast, has been working with hundreds of homeowners across the province. The company has installed over 300KW of power in the last three months, are quoting for solar PV installation across Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, have created four jobs since January and have aspirations to soon create up to another seven jobs.

Mr McNeill said homeowners and businesses across the country, should ask themselves a simple question.

He said: “Do you want to generate free electricity and earn a guaranteed government backed income by producing your own renewable energy for the next 20 years?

“When you consider that a 6.5kW Amber Green Solar PV system installed on a south facing roof, or ground mounted, will reduce energy costs for the average Northern Ireland home by 50-70 per cent. You will earn a strong tax free annual return of up to £1,459 in combined income and savings, guaranteed by Government for the next 20 years. I am sure the answer to your question is ‘yes’.

“Our teams provide advice and information on reducing the cost of energy consumption. We also have the most up to date information on current legislations and details of government incentives that make investing in technology to generate renewable energy more attractive. We talk our customers through the easy process of embracing solar PV installations.

“There are a lot of considerations with home and business owners have to think about such as choosing the right system, choosing the right panels, making the sensible decision not to go down the offer of free solar as we all know nothing is free in life and we do not want to see homeowners across the region losing the rights to their roofs for the next 25 years.”

Mr McNeill added: “We are proud to have served our existing customers and we look forward to helping other homeowners adopt solar PV. We offer a 25 year guarantee on the performance of our solar panel installations and we also hold all of the professional accreditations in-house – MCS, REAL and NICEIC.”
