Maddens truly is mellow as Armagh Cider Company win Gold at Bath & West

By Eleanor McGillie

A NORTHERN Ireland cider producer has won a class at one of the UK’s largest shows – a show which its organisers refer to as “England’s biggest celebration of rural life”.

Armagh Cider Company, based at Drumnasoo Road, Portadown, competed in the heart of cider country in Somerset in the South West of England to win Gold at the Royal Bath & West Show beating over 500 other cider producers who entered the competition.

The show, based at Shepton Mallet, is the home of competition for all cider producers based across the UK and this year attracted 500 traders, more than 4,000 livestock and was celebrating 50 years at the Shepton Mallet showground.

Helen Troughton, owner of Armagh Cider Company, said: “We are delighted that cider produced in Armagh orchards has beaten stiff competition from producers in the heart of the Westcountry cider region. This is a tremendous achievement for our team here at Ballinteggart House where we grow, produce and bottle all of our own artisan ciders.

“To win Gold with Maddens Mellow Cider at the 153rd Bath & West Show is tremendous so congratulations goes to our team for their continued dedication to producing ciders and juices which are totally unique to our orchards.”

Speaking about the quality of entrants this year, Anthony Gibson OBE and the chairman of Orchards and Cider, said: “We have had entries from Northern Ireland before but not for some time and certainly not of the quality of this year’s entries.

“We are delighted with the success of Armagh Cider Company which stand comparison with any ciders produced in the UK.

“We hope it will add further impetus to the development of the cider industry in Northern Ireland and stimulate many more entries.  As chairman of Orchards and Cider, I send my warmest congratulations to all concerned.”
