Co Couture in world’s top 40 after International Chocolate Awards Finals 2014

By Eleanor McGillie

Fine chocolate crafted in a basement kitchen in Belfast’s Chichester Street has won a silver award in the prestigious International Chocolate Awards World Finals 2014.

Co Couture entered its Japanese Cherry Sencha 70% in the competition which attracted over 950 different products from fine chocolate makers from around the world.

This is the only fully independent international fine chocolate making competition in the world celebrating the artistry and craftsmanship of chocolate professionals.

Deirdre McCanny, owner of Co Couture, said the Japanese Cherry Sencha 70% bar has added to Co Couture’s World ranking status.

She said: “The judging panel is made up of experts, food journalists, bloggers, chefs, sommeliers and pastry chefs and attracts fine chocolate makers from across the globe. The awards are designed to reflect international tastes and celebrate and recognise traditional craft companies such as Co Couture.

“To get ‘World Finalist’ status and win a silver in the ‘Flavoured Dark Chocolate Bars With A Filling’ category is such an amazing honour for us.

“What makes our bar extra special is our organic, ethically traded fine chocolate grown in the rainforest territory of northwest Madagascar. The combination of this fine chocolate and Belfast company Suki Tea’s Japanese Cherry Sencha blend has given this bar the filling needed to secure ‘Silver’ in this highly competitive category.”

Oscar Woolley, of Suki Tea, Belfast’s boutique loose leaf tea blender, said: “Collaborating with Co Couture was wonderful. We are two businesses based in Belfast so it was lovely to be able to support Deirdre by offering one of our blends to create the filling for the Japanese Cherry Sencha bar.”

The World Final, which took place in London last month, judged the Gold, Silver and Bronze winners from around the globe. Over 950 products were entered into the European and Americas semi-finals and regional and national competitions took place in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia and Canada.

The winners were announced this week by the International Chocolate Awards team.
