Farm groups support motion to stay in EU as ICTU lobby for workers’ interests

Farmers and businesses are being urged to work together – that’s a key message during a debate on Brexit at the ICTU conference today.

Peter Bunting, assistant General Secretary of the ICTU, said if Northern Ireland has a chance of growing its economy its members must vote ‘Yes’ in the EU referendum. Mr Bunting added that It is critical that farmers and the business community work in tandem to ensure members maximise the ‘Yes’ vote. Here’s the full story:

Father of murdered girl backs motion for the implementation of Clare’s Law

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions Biennial Delegate two day conference in Derry/Londonderry starts tomorrow at Derry City Hotel where a range of motions will be heard.

A motion being put forward on Wednesday is calling for the implementation of Clare’s Law in Northern Ireland. We interviewed Michael Brown, the father of Clare Wood, who was murdered by her ex partner in 2006, to see if he would lend his support to the ICTU motion. Here’s the full story:

£150,000 investment announced for Markethill High a ‘step in the right direction’

The Department of Education have announced a £150,000 investment for Markethill High School – a move which has been welcomed by the school.

Principal James Maxwell said the £146,300 investment for the provision of prefabricated accommodation shows the Education Minister is taking positive steps to provide better facilities for the school and its pupils. Mr Maxwell reiterated the school’s sights are firmly set on a new build and sixth form provision.

Hot on the agenda will be today’s pay rise offer of one per cent for teachers which has been described by the INTO’s Northern Secretary, Gerry Murphy, as ‘an insult to the teaching profession’. Arlene Foster told new build and admissions increase is a ‘must’ for Markethill High

Markethill High School has been vigorously leading a community campaign to get a new build school and sixth form provision on the Mowhan Road site in Markethill.

First Minister Arlene Foster paid a visit to the school recently where principal James Maxwell told her the that the school’s current high standards in educational outcomes are being achieved in spite of the school’s infrastructure. Mr Maxwell said it is no longer acceptable for pupils to be taught in fabricated mobile huts.
