Alive Surf School celebrates ‘Best Family Activity Provider’ award – again!

By Eleanor McGillie

PORTRUSH based Alive Surf School has been awarded ‘Best Family Activity Provider in Northern Ireland’ for the third year in a row by OutdoorNI.

Alive Surf School, owned by Ricky Martin, says the award acknowledges the ethos of the school which believes surfing is world class sport which is accessible to everyone regardless of age, shape, size or fitness levels.

Alive Surf School is the longest running surf school in Northern Ireland and it prides itself in its philosophy – ‘be safe and have fun’.

OutdoorNI have awarded the accolade to Alive Surf School in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

The school, which is also ranked the Number One surf school in Ireland on tripadvisor.com, ensures lessons are as friendly as possible and completely inclusive.

Speaking about the school’s achievement, Ricky said: “Alive Surf School believes surfing is a sport for everyone. Families form a big part of our client base from children to their grandparents. Our record is teaching a 72-year-old man how to surf when he came along with his daughters. We get a lot of families who enjoy doing activities at the weekends and during holidays but we also get a lot of families who have children with autism so there’s very much a healing element to what we do.

“Everyone at Alive Surf School is over the moon to have won the award for a third year in a row. We all work so hard at trying to offer the best surfing lessons in the world and this shows we are heading in the right direction.

“Surfing is such a brilliant sport as it is suitable for all ages, all fitness levels and you do not need to be good at it to have a brilliant time. Our lessons last for two hours and the price includes all the kit and there are free hot showers and changing rooms at the beach too so there is no excuse not to give it a go.

“Lessons run all year and in the summer we have a ‘children’s camp’ which runs from Monday to Thursday each week. We want to make our school completely inclusive and run programmes for people with learning difficulties such as Autism and Downs Syndrome during Easter and Summer holidays.”
