New build school Markethill

Pupil numbers increase to 515 as community renews calls for new build and sixth form

Markethill High School remains on the Education Authority’s priority list for a new build school. Since August 2012 the school has been campaigning for a new build school and sixth form.

The Minister for Education, Mr Peter Weir, has written to Principal James Maxwell to say he commends the ongoing good work at the school and says he hopes to visit the school imminently. The school says campaigning for a new build school and sixth form provision remains top of the agenda at Markethill High.

GCSE results in Markethill

High achievers at Markethill High School celebrate as over 90% get five or more GCSEs

Students at Markethill High School have excelled themselves yet again this year with over 90 per cent of pupils achieving five or more GCSEs.

This is a new record for the school as twelve students achieved seven A*-A grades or more, over 80 per cent passed GCSE English and the pass rate for Maths is sitting at over 75 per cent which is higher than the Northern Ireland averages. The school is continuing its campaign for a new build school and sixth form provision.

Housing crisis is looming as ICTU warns against privatisation of NIHE portfolio

Northern Ireland is on the verge of a housing crisis if plans continue to transfer more and more Housing Executive stock to the voluntary sector.

Brian Campfield, President of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), told delegates at the biennial conference that if the Housing Executive sells its portfolio of houses, then people would no longer be able to afford private rents, and, as a result, education and health would also suffer and jobs would be lost.

Cycle Sperrins – 90-year-old cyclist urges tourists to ‘get on yer bike’

Annie Slane is a 90-year-old woman who has lived in the Sperrins all of her life. Annie loves the Sperrins and continues to cycle every day in the rustic mountain range which she says is keeping her young.

Annie recently attended the launch of Cycle Sperrins – an initiative which is aimed at attracting international touring cyclists to the Sperrin Mountains.

Dowling crowned the 2015 AmberGreen Energy Tour of Ulster champion

Mark Dowling, of DID Dunboyne, has won the overall 2015 AmberGreen Energy Tour of Ulster trophy, in partnership with SDS Energy Group and Saltmarine.

Dowling, who raced from Belfast to Cookstown in 6hrs 17minutes and 32 seconds, beat Eoin Morton by three seconds in the battle to win the pink jersey.
